In 2001, SCRUBS turned the 'doctor drama' formula on its ear, moving stolid patients and practitioners out of their standard, soap-opera seriousness and into the wily world of single-camera comedy. The scrappy sitcom about an eager intern, J.D. (Zach Braff), offered a unique blend of broad humour and surprising heart that quickly made it a critical darling and a cult favourite. Eight series later, the quirky cast has grown up: J.D. is now an M.D., but he's still flanked by the lovely but neurotic Elliot (Sarah Chalke), his best friend, Turk (Donald Faison), no-nonsense nurse Carla (Judy Reyes), and hard-ass Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley). Luckily, with age doesn't necessarily come wisdom, and the 2008-09 series offers more of the show's trademark verbal sparring as J.D. and the others get interns of their own to manage and mislead.
