Product Information
Acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Kinji Fukasaku began cementing his reputation in 1971 with the gangster film SYMPATHY FOR THE UNDERDOG (BAKUTO GAIJIN BUTAI). Koji Tsuruta, one of Japan's biggest gangster-film stars, plays Gunji, a middle-aged Yakuza boss just released from prison. Seeing as his gang has all but fallen apart in the years away, Gunji gathers its members together and moves to Okinawa to rebuild. There, he finds success again, but discovers he must still contend with the brutal gangs of the mainland, who have no respect for the elder gangster or his ways. Fukasaku dramatically changed the gangster genre in Japan with SYMPATHY FOR THE UNDERDOG by portraying criminals as violent, callous, and without honor.Product Identifiers
