In June 1863, the third summer of the American Civil War, the Confederate Army crossed the Potomac and began the invasion of the North. Seventy thousand men strong, it was an army of volunteers, mostly unpaid and self-equipped under the command one of the greatest generals in history - Robert E. Lee. The Union Army, weary from recent defeat, reluctantly set off in pursuit, its leaders preparing themselves for hopefully the last major encounter of the war. The armies met at Gettysburg, a battle which came to symbolise the horrors and the heroism of the war that tore America apart. Michael Shaara's novel is a magnificent recreation of this decisive battle.
