Sonny Wexler (Reynolds) is an old-style producer trying to recapture some of the success and respect he commanded in the past. His hope for one more shot at the big time is a script optioned from an up-and-coming young screenwriter. When the writer decides to make a deal with a brash young studio executive (Benjamin Bratt), Sonny embarks on a quest to exercise his option before it expires in 72 hours. In his struggle to raise the $50,000 required to purchase the script, he turns to everyone from an old studio buddy (Charles Durning) to a shady underworld businessman (Rod Steiger), revealing the desperate measures he will go to in order to save his faded dreams.
