James Gray's taut thriller stars Mark Wahlberg as an ex-con, received back into the bosom of his family, led by his uncle James Caan. Caan runs a company that has lucrative contracts to repair New York's subway trains but he also has to make sure the opposition are seen in a bad light and that means employing Joaquin Phoenix, Wahlberg's best friend, to undertake a little sabotage. As Wahlberg gets sucked into the criminal underworld surrounding the repair yards and violence explodes, so he finds himself a target for the police - and his uncle, who needs to guarantee his silence.
