NotesMany have drawn a line from '70s metal back to the thunderous rocking blues of late-'60s Blue Cheer. Bands engaged in experimental rock, garage, stoner rock and grunge owe a debt to this San Francisco group, too; they exploded onto the charts in '68 with this #11 LP and their hit spin on "Summertime Blues. Blue Cheer originally formed in 1966 in San Francisco, California as a sextet. This early line-up did not last though as numerous members departed soon after. Vocalist and bassist Dickie Peterson (R. I. P) then reformed the group with guitarist Leigh Stephens and drummer Paul Whaley, in the process becoming the dynamic trio it is now known as today. According to research, the group's name was taken from a potent form of LSD that was derived from a laundry detergent (supposedly called "Blue Cheer"). In 1968 Blue Cheer released their first album, "Vincebus Eruptum" (some say the title is Latin for "controlled chaos" or "conquering explosion" while others say it is a nonexistent term). On this album Blue Cheer radiates extreme decibels of noise by turning up the volume to maximum capacity on their monolithic wall of Marshall amplifiers. " Their sonic assaults-which also include "Parchman Farm," "Rock Me Baby," "Doctor Please" and more-come through with stunning clarity on this hybrid SACD, available now in a limited, numbered edition!
