Using eBay checkout

eBay checkout allows buyers to pay you quickly using the Pay now button. Buyers can pay online using PayPal, or see your instructions for payment.

How it works

  1. When the listing ends, your buyer sees a prominent Pay now button on the listing page, in My eBay, and in their email notification.

  2. Provided you've specified postage costs and other details in your listing, the total cost is calculated automatically when the buyer clicks Pay now.

  3. The buyer can review the total cost and specify where they want the item posted. They can also add more items you’re selling to their purchase.

  4. You'll receive a notification once the buyer has completed checkout.

See more about selecting payment methods you'll accept and setting up your payment preferences.

Note: Guest buyers can only pay for items using PayPal.

Check out these tips

These tips will save you time and help your buyers pay you faster:

Specify payment details
Specify all payment details when you list the item: Postage & packaging, tax, and so on. This lets your buyers know exactly what they'll be paying.
Specify whether you require a deposit
You can request that buyers send you a deposit to confirm their intent to purchase.
Note: A buyer's deposit is non-binding and is done in good faith.
Get set up for PayPal payments
You have to offer PayPal when listing on For help with getting set up, see Selecting your payment preferences.
Specify special payment instructions
Your payment instructions appear to your buyers when they select their payment method. If you have any special instructions for your buyers, this helps bring it to their attention. These instructions may be seen by anyone who views your item. You can enter these when listing your item, under Additional check out instructions.
Specify postage discounts
If you offer postage discounts, you can automate them in the eBay system. In this case, checkout automatically calculates these discounts for your buyers. Discounts are promoted during checkout to encourage additional purchases.
Specify whether you accept special instructions
You can choose whether to allow buyers to include special instructions for you on the checkout page. This feature is automatically enabled, which means you may receive special instructions from your buyers.
  • Enabling this feature makes sense for sellers who often require instructions from their buyers (eg measurements or colour requests), or for sellers who have the time to read and respond to each individual order.

  • Disabling this feature makes sense for large sellers who have automated operations, and who can't make adjustments to orders before they're dispatched.

To disable special instructions at checkout:
  1. Go to My eBay. You may need to sign in.

  2. From the Account tab, click Manage your communications with buyers.

  3. Next to Manage questions and answers, click Edit.

  4. Clear the Allow buyers to provide special instructions on their order during checkout option.

  5. Click Submit. Your preferences will be applied to all of your listings.

Disabling checkout

Checkout is enabled automatically when you set up your seller account, and you need to use it to receive PayPal payments.

All sellers on must offer PayPal as a payment method, with the exception of a few categories (for details, see the Accepted payments policy). If you're listing in these categories, you can disable checkout.

To disable eBay checkout:
  1. Go My eBay. You may need to sign in.

  2. From the Account tab, select Site preferences.

  3. Under Seller Preferences, in the Payment from buyers section, click Show.

  4. Click Edit. You may need to sign in again.

  5. Under Checkout Preference, clear the Use checkout box.

  6. Click Submit at the bottom of the page.
