Seller's checklist

Here's a complete checklist for selling on eBay. For details about each step, see Sell an Item – Getting Started.

1. Become a registered eBay seller.

Provide us with valid credit/debit card or bank account information.

Let us know how you would like to pay your seller fees.

2. Sign up to accept PayPal.

3. Research your item.

Make sure your item is legal and okay to sell on eBay. (See prohibited items policies.)

Choose a selling format (such as Auction-style, or Buy-It-Now).

Search active and completed listings for listing category and price ideas.

Calculate postage & packaging costs and look at other ways you can optimise your postage.

4. Create your listing.

As you create your listing, we make recommendations based on research of similar listings. The recommendations are designed to help you sell your items faster and at a better price.

Start selling:
  1. At the top of any eBay page, click the Sell tab.

  2. On the Sell page, click the Start selling button.

  3. Sign in. You are now in the Sell Your Item process.

  4. Select a category by searching, browsing, or using a previous category selection.

Create your listing:
  1. The first few times you list, you may be asked to choose a listing form.

  2. Based on the category you choose, you’ll be asked to include important details about your item.

    • If your item matches a product in our catalogue (for example, if it’s a book, DVD, mobile phone, or other electronic item), you’ll be offered pre-filled item information and a stock photo from our catalogue.

    • For items in other categories, you’ll be asked to fill out item specifics such as the item’s condition, size, or style.

  3. Complete the listing form.

5. Manage your listing.

Check in at My eBay to see how bidding is going.

Answer all questions you receive from potential buyers.

6. Wrap up with your buyer.

If you used Checkout or PayPal and your buyer completes Checkout or pays by PayPal, respond quickly to payment notification and post the item as you specified in your listing.

You can also use Checkout to send the buyer an invoice.

If you didn't use Checkout, contact the buyer directly by email or phone.

Important: Contact the buyer directly if you haven't heard from the buyer or received Checkout or PayPal notification within three days of your listing's end.

Leave buyer feedback.
