The 1960s are still loved by many with many of the fashion trends being alternative to everyday fashion. Take, for example, the mini skirt, which was brought into fashion by British designer Mary Quant. She also introduced the jumper dress into fashion.
A second wave of feminism made both mini skirts and trousers for women popular. Women wanted to be given the freedom of choice.
1960s Dresses
British styles and mod culture heavily influenced dresses of 1960s. As opposed to their 'rivals' the rockers who wore black leather, the mods were all about class with high fashion clothing and styles. Mod girls loved bright colours, mini dresses and geometric prints.
Popular styles include velvet mini dresses with contrasting lace collars and cuffs and flared mini dresses with wide sleeves. The pretty collars of the 1950s were still popular but dresses were shorter and even more colourful.
In the late 60s, hippie culture inspired more loose-fitting dresses with flowing designs.
1960s Youth Fashion
1960s fashion had a huge focus on youth fashion and there was a big wave of 'baby doll' style, which incorporated cute 'childlike' looks into women's wardrobes. Popular styles included bows and oversize collars as well as shift dresses and non-fitted styles that detracted from women's body shapes.
These dresses were often paired with Mary Jane shoes or kitten heels.
1960s Coats
Wool coats were very much on trend in 1960s, and you'll find many still around. The coats of the day were usually loose-fitting, stopping just above the knee to make the legs look skinnier, sometimes a belt would accentuate the waist.
