A party is not a party without a cake and a cake is not a cake without candles but have you ever wondered why? Sure, most people like cake (we're sure those who say they don't are joking). But when and how did the birthday traditions we know today begin - the cake, the wishes, the candles, the song? The melody we sing before blowing out the birthday candles was written in 1893 by a kindergarten teacher and titled 'Good morning everyone', meaning it was not a birthday song. Family of the original author sued those who used a modified 'Happy Birthday' song, and the legal battles continued for decades. This was the reason why many restaurants created their own 'Happy Birthday' jingle and why it was rare to hear the song in films - they didn't want to pay royalties. Across the globe, different cultures have special ways of celebrating a person’s birthday. One theory is that the history of putting candles on cake began in Ancient Greece. Happy Birthday!
