Gets hot
I have mine sitting on top of my mesh metal cage lid into a 20 gal tank and it keeps it right about 70-80° at the bottom of the tank on one side. I have an additional bulb on mine since our basement is chilly but I do recommend this bulb. I leave it on for days at a time on its highest setting and even though I worry about it's hotness I have not had any issues with it
